چکیده

The well-known Rado graph R is universal in the set of all countable graphs I, since every countable graph is an induced subgraph of R. We study universality in I and, using R, show the existence of 20 pairwise non-isomorphic graphs which are universal in I and denumerably many other universal graphs in I with prescribed attributes. Then we contrast universality for and universality in induced-hereditary properties of graphs and show that the overwhelming majority of induced-hereditary properties contain no universal graphs. This is made precise by showing that there are 2 א0 ) properties in the lattice K≤ of induced-hereditary properties of which only at most 20 contain universal graphs. In a final section we discuss the outlook on future work; in particular the question of characterizing those induced-hereditary properties for which there is a universal graph in the property.

Universality in graph properties with degree restrictions

Rado constructed a (simple) denumerable graph R with the positive integers as vertex set with the following edges: For given m and n with m < n, m is adjacent to n if n has a 1 in the m’th position of its binary expansion. It is well known that R is a universal graph in the set Ic of all countable graphs (since every graph in Ic is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of R). A brief overview of kn...

Prime ideals in the lattice of additive induced-hereditary graph properties

An additive induced-hereditary property of graphs is any class of finite simple graphs which is closed under isomorphisms, disjoint unions and induced subgraphs. The set of all additive induced-hereditary properties of graphs, partially ordered by set inclusion, forms a completely distributive lattice. We introduce the notion of the join-decomposability number of a property and then we prove th...

Ideal Amenability of Banach Algebras and Some Hereditary Properties

Let A be a Banach algebra. A is called ideally amenable if for every closed ideal I of A, the first cohomology group of A with coefficients in I* is trivial. We investigate the closed ideals I for which H1 (A,I* )={0}, whenever A is weakly amenable or a biflat Banach algebra. Also we give some hereditary properties of ideal amenability.

Unique factorisation of additive induced-hereditary properties

An additive hereditary graph property is a set of graphs, closed under isomorphism and under taking subgraphs and disjoint unions. Let P1, . . . ,Pn be additive hereditary graph properties. A graph G has property (P1 ◦ · · · ◦Pn) if there is a partition (V1, . . . , Vn) of V (G) into n sets such that, for all i, the induced subgraph G[Vi] is in Pi. A property P is reducible if there are propert...

A Note on the Speed of Hereditary Graph Properties

For a graph property X, let Xn be the number of graphs with vertex set {1, . . . , n} having property X, also known as the speed of X. A property X is called factorial if X is hereditary (i.e. closed under taking induced subgraphs) and n1 ≤ Xn ≤ n c2n for some positive constants c1 and c2. Hereditary properties with the speed slower than factorial are surprisingly well structured. The situation...
